The history of the shipping industry dates back as far as 3200 BC. Until the mid 19th century, ships mainly relied on the wind for their operation. As such, sea transportation was then characterized by low speed, low capacity, high risk and being approriate for a limited range of commodities, mostly general cargo. However, such inventions as steam and diesel engines in the 20 century and containers in 1960s have revolutionised the shipping industry. The industry has seen significant improvements in efficiency, productivity, speed, and service quality. In addition, it now can accommodate almost all kinds of cargoes, from low value like metal scrap to valuable merchandise like electronic products whether they are general, bulk or liquefied. Nowadays, shipping is the most popular method of goods transportation. Statistically, it accounts for around 80 per cent of global trade by volum,e and over 70 per cent by value (UNCTAD, 2012). The proportions are even higher in many developing countries where air, rail and road transport are undeveloped. Reportedly, almost all organisations engaging in intenational trade have used sea transport for carriage of goods on a regular basis.

The book titled Transportation of Goods by Sea and Marine Cargo Insurance discusses two important operations of internation trade: Marine cargo tranportation and Insurance. It can be used as a reference material for lecturers and students who are learning and teaching international business. It can also be used as a hand book for enterprises seeking to charter and insure cargoes transported by sea.

This book contains 6 chapters:

Chapter 1: Sea transport and international trade

Chapter 2: Introduction to shipping

Chapter 3: Liner trade

Chapter 4: Bill of lading

Chapter 5: Tramp chartering

Chapter 6: Marine cargo insurance
